LyricsCatcher v0.99 released *For all your managing issues*

Postby 317070 » Fri 17. Apr 2009, 00:58

Teaser is out. It shows how I created 5 songs (I think) in an average of 1.10 minute per song... most of the time waiting for the download of course...

Preview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yxv0Xjffco
Download: https://sourceforge.net/projects/lyricscatcher/

What do you need to do to use the program:
1)you need to own the .mp3's (but not necessarily on your computer)
2)load them into the program
3) press download all,
* covers lyrics AND video will be downloaded automatically by using the searchpage from gracenote, USDB and youtube*
4) synchronize them by pressing the "lyrics start" button while playing the video/mp3
5) DONE

Image

If you're in a hurry, just right click on your song, and press "Download all". The song will be created for you. But you need to have the right mp3 for the lyrics and the video...

The next big thing it does is when you have quite a library of mp3's on your computer and a lyrics-pack (like found on various places on the internet in .zip), it will automatically make a smart guess to which song fit to which lyrics, and matches them.

Or if you own the mp3, you can download lyrics automatically from usdb, by right clicking and pressing (lyrics -> download lyrics)

After that you can play the song and see if all fits nicely by playing the song, the lyrics will show up. If the Lyrics are correct, but the gap is setted wrong, you can adjust easily by pressing the "Lyrics start button". The start of the lyrics will be set to the moment you pressed the button.

If all works well, you can automatically download the cover, which is downloaded from Gracenote, by right clicking on the song and choosing (-> cover -> download) or by browsing to the image on your computer.

If you want a background added to your song, find a pretty image on the web, copy either the picture or the url and press the "past background" button, or download it automatically.

If you want a video, the program is able to use the youtube search-engine and download a video from youtube. Just right-click on the song and press (video->download video). A video is downloaded automatically. When you want to set the Videogap right. Press the "Play Video"-button, and while the video plays, press the lyrics-start button to set the gap just like you did for the mp3.

If you are ready, you can test it all by pressing the "Play combination" button.

After that, according to the properties you have set, the file will already have been created in your Ultrastar-folder with al Tags set correctly, or you need to export by pressing the export tab, and than letting the program Export. Note that ALL files will be copied, nothing is removed from its original location.

Next to that it also has the options to create a printable list of your songs, or to edit the lyrics, Automatically Update config files, to prevent the program to break down from a broken URL like happened when moving the USDB-database, etc...

Is it the same project than the one available on sourceforge here : http://sourceforge.net/projects/lyricscatcher ?

I'm not sure I understand correctly what the application is able to do. Are the lyrics downloaded from USDB only or from Gracenote too ? I guess it's the former because the latter would be quite more difficult, but who knows... ;)

Anyway, it could be a great help in the case someone owns a different MP3 from the one used to create the song on USDB.

known bugs at the moment (it's still a beta): The GUI will not always represent the most accurate representation of the data, f.i. you are missing some of those pretty v's in your song collection (for instance, you have a cover for a certain song, but it isn't selected (yet) in the table). Workaround: first select to see the lyrics or the mp3's with lyrics or another set of files, than return to the option you were looking to. Everything is refreshed.
Other problem: even if the thing says "downloaded 9887654 of 9945623 bytes", the download is finished. If it stopped downloading, it is most likely to have finished downloading the video.

Hi Tom,

first let me thank you for your great tool! You helped me already to save a lot of time. Until today I already processed about 5000 songs from my archive where I can now use about 350 songs for USDX.

As I know that Lyricscatcher is still under development and reached beta status so far I'm aware of it that there are still some issues to solve. And I think I maybe found some issues ;). In Sourceforge I don't see any public announced bugs, issues or change requests. That's why I first write you here. So here are my findings and suggestions:

The following issues occured in MS Windows Vista x64 Home Professional with 4GB RAM with actual Java VM installed.
  • Special chars like german umlauts in title, artist, etc. produce exceptions during import, lyrics-, cover- and video download. Leads to wrong directory- and file names (e.g. "Die Ärtze" --> "Die rzte")
  • More wrong folder- and file names under unclear circumstances (e.g. "Blink 182" --> "Blink 8")
  • After above mentioned exceptions further import qeue stops until automatic download window was closed and at least one new job for downloading something (lyrics, cover, video) was added
  • Long import qeues (500+ entries) make GUI behave slow. Trying to click in main window leads to unresponsiveness of the whole application until main process is killed
  • "Play Video" does not work at all for me independend if I use the internal DLLs or my already existing installation of VLC
  • Jumping in MP3 files does mostly work fine but not for some files. It's not VBR MP3 but I don't see the difference or reason.

Any hints about this would be deeply appreciated even if the answer is "this is by design" ;)
If you whish I could transfer my finding into Sourceforge. Just let me know.

Best regards & happy coding
Mike

First of all, you probably have no idea how much it means to me that someone actually uses my software. :D

I have indeed build in a filter for bad characters in my program, it could indeed use some finetuning, this will be fixed in the next version.
I will also take a look at the slow GUI, it should run slower, but not noteably...
The program has problems with variable bitrate coded mp3's, and most kinds of broken mp3's. This however will most likely not be fixed in a near future, since this is an external library ;)

For the video, I have got no clue what could cause this. I guess its the 64bit which makes it a trouble, but than it would still be able to run from an appropriate VLC installation. I could however help you further if you would mail the Lyrlog.txt to me, when the crashes happens. This should help me retrace the problem to it's source. Also I will turn the sourceforge bugtracking options on :)

again, thx for using my software

grtz,

First of all let me thank you for your real fast response. I appreciate this by giving you as much feedback as I can. It's a pleasure for me to use your program because it's a real help for me.
Dealing with a large music archive with 15.000+ songs is always problematic. This amount of songs I handle with MediaMonkey. And with Lyricscatcher I really save a lot of (I mean really awful lot of) time in checking and importing songs to USDX. Since my post of yesterday I "produced" almost 700 new songs including lyrics, covers and videos. :o

According to your answer to my issues I will try to create some logs for you during the next days by recreating some "problematic" songs. As soon as I have reproduced my issues I will send the log to you. Before this I will play around a bit with different versions of VLC as I found out that my actual installed version is not the most actual one.

As the next step I have some ideas for improvement of your fine tool:
  • A central dialogue for setting program options (including save/save as.../load different configs)
  • Saving import paths for lyrics, mp3s to reoccur after next start of the program
  • Same to the position and width of the columns as I prefer to have the colum "path" always in first position.
  • The up- and down sliding dialogue for importing lyrics and/or mp3s is nice but somewhat annoying if you get outside this window with your mouse cursor because the window slides down very easily. Maybe here a button "hide/unhide" or a separate window would be more useable.
  • The chance to remove entries from download qeue after an entry has been added but not yet downloaded
  • According to the 24 seconds wait time in USDB it would be a good idea to collect found lyrics from the qeue for downloading instead of getting them one by one to avoid to have 24 seconds wait time for each single lyric
  • Please give us the option to select from different sources for downloading covers or videos as there are better places out there to get videos (please check http://www.downloadhelper.net/sites.php for a real sophisticated list of videosites. I found this place to be helpful to get unrated videos e.g "Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Relax", "50 Cent - Candy Shop", "Fergie - Fergalicious", etc. :D )
  • If several covers/videos for a song are found then please let us decide which cover/lyric we'd like to use for the song (maybe a case for "the new" options dialogue)
  • Enhancement of the lyrics editor (maybe in cooperation with other projects like StarForge, USEdit, etc.)
  • Enhancement of the file management (I use Ultrastar Manager for bringing all my songs to a standarized structure after getting lyrics, covers and video with your Lyricscatcher)

I'm aware of it that many of these ideas are really difficult to realize and they will sure take long time (maybe eternally ;) ) and I whish my coding skills would be good enough to contribute to your project but after working a lot with your extremely helpful tool I see this as logical step for the complete process from pure song to a working collection in USDX.

I hope to hear soon from you.

Best regards, cheers & happy coding
Mike
